A Major Disappointment

Having been training the team all winter for the Chena Hot Springs Resort Centennial Passenger Race, it turns out that we won't be able to run in that race after all. As so frequently happens, my work schedule is going to force me to miss that event.

I was working under the assumption that the race would be held over the first weekend in April. It turns out, the race is scheduled for March 29th and 30th. When I learned the news I contacted my supervisor for a brain-storming session, hoping we could come up with a way to have one of my co-workers cover my post during the race.

There are only 7 medics on the shift opposite mine, and it turns out that all 7 are already committed to either other work projects or to a mandatory training class that weekend.

My late wife used to frequently remind me that although we can not control the circumstances in which we find ourselves, we can control our attitude about those circumstances. I'm trying - really trying to control my disappointment. After all, I wasn't drafted into my job. A full-time, year-round reliable money-making job is hard to come by in Alaska, and not something to be squandered.

Nonetheless, there are times - such as this time, when I really wish that I could find a job with a more convenient schedule.

That's unlikely to happen, so I guess I'll just keep trying to stem my disappointment, cowboy up and soldier on.
